Oh! it's simple just go to the user page of the person you want to add. Then in the upper right under "My Options" click "Watch User". But there's catch, the person you added has to add you also to "watch user" then you will become friends. You both have to add each other, if only one of you adds the other then it will be labeled "I'm Watching"
Basically you and your will be friend both have to add each other to "watch user" than once you both add on another it will be labeled "My Friends."
